Benissa

Benissa - Benissa is a municipality within the province of Alicante.  Along its 4km coastline between the towns of Moraira and Calp you can find many small bays such as La Fustera & La cala de Advocat (sandy) and El Pinets, La Lobella, Baladrar, & Les Basetes with a small Marina.  In the town of Benissa you can walk through narrow cobbled streets and enjoy hundreds of years of history and historic buildings.

The History of Benissa - The name Benissa dates back to before the expulsion of the Moors in 1609, an Arabic name (Banu-Issa) meaning “Issa’s children.  Even now many of Benissa’s streets and zones still hold Arabic names. Settlers that followed the Moriscos were from the Pyrenees, Catalonia and Aragon. You can find the Town Hall in the Plaza del Portal.  The building was constructed in the year 1790 as a hospital but in 1981 the building underwent complete restoration and reopened as the Town Hall.

Interesting places to see in Benissa – “Plaza del Portal (Gateway square) located opposite the Town Hall.  The name refers to one of the old gateways in the Ancient town wall.  In the centre of the Plaza you can find the Cruz de Piedra Arenisca.  One of Benissa’s most important and beautiful sites is the “Plaza de la Iglesia Antigua originally dominated by La Igelsia de San Pedro which was built between 1550 and 1570 believed to be built on the foundations of a 14th century mosque.  The church we see today “Purísima Xiqueta Iglesia Parroquial” was built in the 20’s thanks to several private donations, the building is a neo-gothic style with three naves.  Antigua Sala del Consejo or old council room situated in Calle Mayor was built at the end of the 16th century, this building was used for council meeting and also a commercial use for selling wheat and almonds from the local farms.  In the 20’s the building was used as a small school and today there is still an old almond shelling machine inside the building.  Convento de la Inmaculada Concepción” was opened in 1613 by a group of Franciscan monks.  The church is of renaissance architecture and inside there are interesting objests and a small museum.  House-museum Abargues” was built in the 18th – 19th century; today visitors can find typical furniture and decoration of noble households of this time.
